The Burden Archive holdings include photographic negatives, prints and digital scans, as well as paintings, drawings and architectural design documents. Our continuing work involves cataloging, scanning, restoring and developing enriching materials to allow the works to contribute to history and art. The resulting assets will be offered in publications, exhibitions, college curriculum and general availability through a public library system--both on-site and online.
Current projects are bringing forward lost photographic evidence of the racist and destructive policies of 1960's Urban Renewal in San Francisco. These tragic but beautifully captured images validate the lived memory of the community elders. Confronting the difficult past invites discussion of a more equitable future for urban planning.
